Iron Rangers edge Miners in shootout

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – John Cuni had the difference maker in the shootout as the Minnesota Iron Rangers edged the English River Miners 2-1 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Both teams would notch their lone goals in regulation via the power play in the first period.

Nolan Magsemen gave Minnesota the lead with the man advantage at 8:14 of the opening stanza while Kyle Crawford supplied the equalizer for English River four minutes later.

Neither side would manage to score again through the remainder of regulation as well as a five-minute OT sending the game to extra shots to determine a winner.

Cuni and Dalton Johnson would connect for the Iron Rangers while the Miners were held scoreless.

Alex Burke stopped 23 of 24 attempts, plus two more in the shootout, to pick up the win in his debut for Minnesota.

Korlan Vader was also solid for English River helping the Miners pick up a point on the night as he finished with 32 saves on the night.
