Fort Frances gets by English River 4-3

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Jared Virtanen scored once and assisted on two others while Dylan Kooner tallied twice to help the Fort Frances Lakers get past the English River Miners 4-3 in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.

It took Kooner just 22 seconds to open the night’s scoring while teammate Matt Cheetham put the home side up by two, midway through the opening period.

The Miners countered in the second stanza with two of their own to knot the affair at 2-2 thanks to Michael Di Lullo and Trevor Pereverzoff.

Virtanen put the Lakers back on top 46 seconds into the final frame while Kooner notched the eventual game-winner six minutes later while Fort Frances was shorthanded.

Pereverzoff added his second of the evening during a man advantage opportunity with 7:05 to go, but that’s as close as they would get before time expired.

Virtanen’s big night allowed him to extend a consecutive game point streak to 11 in the process.

English River outshot the Lakers 39-25 with Brandon Bodnar picking up the victory and Michael Lenko the loss.
