Fort Frances and Thunder Bay pick-up wins Saturday

THUNDER BAY – The top two teams in the Superior International Junior Hockey League standings in the Fort Frances Lakers and Thunder Bay North Stars both skated away with road victories Saturday night.

FORT FRANCES LAKERS 4 ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 2 – Bryce Lipinski tallied twice and set-up another while Colton Spicer dished out three assists to help lead Fort Frances to their 12th consecutive victory, a 4-2 triumph over English River at Ear Falls Arena.

The Lakers took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes getting power play markers from Lipinski and Kevin Kurm sandwiched around an even strength effort from the Miners’ Kellen McBlain.

Lyndon Lipinski increased the visitors lead with the only goal of the middle stanza, which came at the 12-second mark of the session.

John Morales pulled the home side to within one six minutes into the third, but Spicer fed Bryce Lipinski for some insurance at 13:44 as Fort Frances notched their third man advantage goal of the game to round out the scoring.

Jordan Cartney faced 18 shots in picking up the win helping the Lakers improve to a SIJHL-best 13-0-0-1.

Greg Harney was peppered with 45 pucks in a losing cause for English River as they fell to 4-11-1-0 in their first year in the league.

THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS 4 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 1 – Thunder Bay got goals from four different skaters en route to the road victory at the Spooner Ice House.

Danile Delpaggio opened the scoring for the North Stars with six minutes remaining in the first on to see Darrick Howard tie things up before the stanza was complete.

Thunder Bay then took a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes getting markers from Brandon Wolframe and Cary Brown.

Taylor Santorelli then wrapped it up in the third as he added an insurance effort just under five minutes into the period.

Eric Mann was the winning goaltender, helping the North Stars raise their record to 9-1-0-2 while Luke Thompson suffered the loss for the Wilderness who fell to 1-11.
