Former SIJHL coach of the year Aldoff earns ECHL position

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Former Superior International Junior Hockey League coach of the year Rod Aldoff was named the new head coach of the ECHL’s Norfolk Admirals Monday.

The 45-year-old Aldoff spent three seasons serving as coach and general manager with the Wisconsin and Minnesota Wilderness franchise from 2010 through 2013 capturing a trio of SIJHL regular season titles and as many Bill Salonen Cup playoff championships.

He also guided the Wilderness to a Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A crown in 2013 along with a semifinal berth in the RBC Cup Canadian national Jr. A event where they fell in overtime to the eventual champion Brooks Bandits (AJHL).

In three seasons at the helm of the Wilderness, Aldoff amassed an impressive 145-15-8 overall record behind the bench while twice being named of SIJHL coach of the year while also earning a CCM Hockey Gary Cook Memorial Award league honours.

He also guided Team Canada West to a win at the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Events in Nova Scotia back in November of 2012.

After his time in the SIJHL, the Lethbridge, Alta., product spent the past three seasons at the helm of the Pensacola Ice Flyers of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

With the Ice Flyers, Aldoff captured two SPHL crowns, including the 2015-16 campaign and was named the league’s coach of the year in 2013-14 and leaves Pensacola as the franchise’s all-time winningest coach.

An alumnus of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, he played defence for the Melfort Mustangs (SJHL) for two seasons, from 1989-91.

From there he went on to earn a NCAA scholarship wearing the Maroon and Gold of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

Aldoff skated at UMD for four years before moving on to a 15-year professional career in both North America and Europe and then eventually into coaching.

Norfolk serves as the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.
