English River edges Thunder Bay in wild one

RED LAKE, Ont. – For a second straight night, goals came early and often as the English River Miners outlasted the Thunder Bay North Stars 8-7 Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter at Cochenour Arena.

It was an amazing opening 20 minutes with the Miners scoring all eight of their goals on the night in the session while the North Stars countered with five of their own.

Ryker Moreau had a big night offensively for English River as he tallied twice and added three assists in the win.

Alex Maticic chipped in with a pair of markers while Nash Dabb, Daniel Szpakowski, Konnar Dechaine and Trevor Pereverzoff supplied singles.

Landen Matechuk and Brandon Schaber had three assists each for the Miners.

Thunder Bay got two goals apiece from Brad Arabia and Joe Newhouse with Jared Fanti, Nicholas Nigro and Aaron Balcombe accounting for the others.

Kris Hamlin, Aaron Wesley-Chisel and Jake Robinson doled out two helpers each of the Stars.

Shots on goal favoured English River 52-37 with Korlan Vader picking up the win.

Tyler Lesschaeve started for Thunder Bay before giving way to Devin Russell as they allowed four each in the first while facing 52 shots overall in defeat.
