Dryden dumps Thunder Bay in 2016 opener

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs began their 2016 portion of their Superior International Junior Hockey League schedule with a bang Saturday as they blasted the Thunder Bay North Stars 8-1 at Memorial Arena.

Dryden came out flying to begin the contest grabbing a 3-0 lead after one period of play on the first SIJHL markers by Cole Rooney, Mark Ziobro and Karsen Szczecinski.

Nic Noseworthy made it 4-0 early in the second before Nicholas Nigro got one back for the North Stars with a power play marker at 14:08.

Dryden however added two more markers before the middle session was complete to take control of the contest on tallies by Ben Smaha and another by Rooney.

The GM Ice Dogs then put the game away in the third tacking on a pair of power play efforts from Matt Houston and Ziobro to round out the scoring.

Taylor Unruh made 24 saves to pick up the win for Dryden with Eric Mann facing 41 shots in defeat for Thunder Bay.
