THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars rode the strength of a six-goal second period to send them on their way to an eventual 8-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers in Superior International Junior Hockey League play Tuesday evening at the Fort William Gardens.
Fort Frances did notch the night’s opening tally near the four-minute mark of the first frame as Chase Robideau darted down the length of the ice and fired one past Thunder Bay starter Dougie Newhouse from the right side.
The Lakers lead held up until early in the middle session when Michael Stubbs started the North Stars outburst 72 seconds in.
The home side then struck twice in rapid succession midway through the period with Ryan Mignault and Jayden Mrakic both finding the back of the net.
It was more Thunder Bay from there as Jacob Anttonen, Mignault and Alex Erwin all connected to make it 6-1 through two.
Jacob Brown added to the North Stars cushion just after a penalty they had expired as he skated in and calmly tucked a low attempt in for his 17th of the season.
Brown then rounded out the night’s scoring with his second of the evening and 18th overall at 17:30.
Newhouse finished with 19 saves to register his ninth straight victory.
Jacob Gnidziejko started for Fort Frances and suffered the loss allowing six against on 39 shots in two periods of work while Matt Booth handled 17 of 19 in relief.
