4-point night for Venne in SIJHL debut as Miners slip past GM Ice Dogs

RED LAKE, Ont. – Newly acquired Morgan Venne scored once and assisted on three others for the Red Lake Miners in his Superior International Junior Hockey League debut, a 4-3 win over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Saturday at Cochenour Arena.

Dryden did open the night’s scoring nearly seven minutes into the season on Cameron Coutre’s seventh of the season.

Red Lake came back 64 seconds later as Venne tied it before helping set-up Spencer Milne for his sixth at 12:38.

After Sean Gula connected during a man advantage midway through the middle stanza, the GM Ice Dogs got goals from Curtis Magas and Coutre, on a penalty shot, to put the visitors up by one late.

However, the Miners answered once more before the second was complete as Michael Di Lullo found the back of the net at 18:45 in what proved to be the game-winner.

Neither side would connect in a scoreless final frame as Red Lake held firm to pull out the home ice triumph.

Vince Benedetto made 26 saves in the Miners’ net to pick up the win while Tyler Thompson faced 31 shots in a losing cause for Dryden.
