Williams wins in in OT for Dryden

DRYDEN, Ont. – A Troy Williams goal 2:05 into overtime was the difference as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs managed to withstand a third period rally by the Minnesota Iron Rangers to pull out a 5-4 victory Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Memorial Arena.

Minnesota did get on the board first thanks to a Gus Karkinen effort three minutes into the contest.

Dryden countered that by getting a goal from Matt Houston at 14:02 to level the proceedings at 1-1 after one.

The second stanza was all GM Ice Dogs as they got markers from Nic Noseworthy and Derek McPhail to grab a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

A Kent Walchuk man advantage effort early in the third put Dryden up by three and seemingly in control, but the Iron Rangers weren’t done quite yet.

Dalton Johnson struck shorthanded at 6:35 to make it 4-2 while teammate Tristyn Sabina knocked one in on a power play just over a minute later.

Minnesota then forced extra time with 8:39 to go in regulation as John Cuni tied it with his first SIJHL goal.

In OT, Williams would it for Dryden to give the GM Ice Dogs the extra point on the night.

Shots on net favoured the winners by a 43-33 count with Taylor Unruk picking up the win and Kyle Carignan helping his side pick-up a point in the OT setback.
