Wilderness netminder Gordy Defiel named Pizza Hut player of the week
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Wednesday that Minnesota Wilderness goaltender Gordy Defiel has been named Pizza Hut player of the week for the period concluding Feb. 10.
In two starts this past week, the 20-year-old native of Stillwater, Minn., was victorious in both of them, registering a shutout and stopping 47 of 48 shots he faced in the process.
Defiel began his award-winning effort Saturday by turning aside all 25 shots he faced in posting his league-leading fifth shutout of the season in a 3-0 road victory at Thunder Bay.
He followed that up Sunday by making 22 more stops in a 5-1 triumph over the North Stars.
On the 2012-13 season the Wilderness netminder sports an impressive 20-1-0-1 overall record and currently leads all SIJHL puck stoppers with a stingy 1.41 goals-against average and stellar .943 save percentage.
In fact, among those who have played 1,000 minutes or more this season, Defiel presently tops all goalkeepers in the entire 127-team Canadian Junior Hockey League in both those categories as well.
Pizza Hut player of the week Honourable Mention went to Tyson Holder, (F) Dryden Ice Dogs; Riley Daly, (F) Minnesota Iron Rangers and Mason Meyer, (F) Fort Frances Lakers.
At the conclusion of the 2012-13 regular season the SIJHL’s top performer will earn the Pizza Hut player of the year award.
