Wilderness defeat Lakers 5-3

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Minnesota Wilderness got goals from five different players en route to a 5-3 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Saturday in Superior International Junior Hockey League preseason play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Drake Hunter and Jeremy Johnson staked Minnesota to an early lead before Merritt Rysavy cut the deficit in half for Fort Frances at the 12-minute mark of the opening period.

Alex Harvey and Jordan Shockley extended the Wilderness cushion to 4-1 in the middle frame only to see Alex Bruess strike with three seconds remaining in the stanza to bring the Lakers closer.

Joel Bogacki’s marker with 11:46 remaining made it a one-goal game, but Dylan Haskins iced it with an empty-netter in the final minute to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal favoured the visitors 32-27 with Gordy Defiel picking up the win and Dustin Stevens suffering the loss.

Elsewhere in SIJHL preseason play Saturday the hometown Dryden Ice Dogs defeated the Sioux Lookout Flyers by a 7-4 score.

Chris Belhumeur tallied twice to pace the Ice Dogs offensively while Austin Lewis, Cole Sonstebo, Tyson Holder, Chris Sitko and Tyler Walsh supplied singles.

Scoring for Sioux Lookout were Brody Fostey, Blake Luscombe, Ethan Beardy and Jon Carpenter.

League exhibition action concludes Sunday as the Wilderness host the Lakers at the Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet. The opening face-off is set for 4 p.m.
