Wilderness blank Iron Rangers 3-0

HOYT LAKES, Minn.  – Gordy Defiel turned aside all 23 shots he faced to help back stop the Minnesota Wilderness to a 3-0 victory over the rival Minnesota Iron Rangers Sunday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The shutout was Defiel’s league-leading sixth of the season, which is one more than teammate JoJo Jeanetta’s five.

Their 11 combined blankings are currently the most of any club in the entire 127-team Canadian Junior Hockey League.

After a scoreless opening period the Wilderness struck twice in the middle session on markers by Michael MacKinnon and Mike Dietrich three minutes apart.

Dan Divis then iced it in the final minute of the contest with an empty-net effort.

Joey Rebedew made 31 stops in a losing cause for the Iron Rangers.

With the win the Wilderness improve to 46-3-0-1 on the season while the Iron Rangers slipped to 26-27-0-2 overall.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as the Dryden Ice Dogs host the Fort Frances Lakers in a 7:30 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
