Thunder Bay surprises Fort Frances 3-2

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Kris Hamlin had a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and an assist as the Thunder Bay North Stars surprised the Superior International Junior Hockey League-leading Fort Frances Lakers 3-2 Saturday at the Fort William Gardens.

Special teams allowed Fort Frances to open the scoring as Andrew Willner scored on the power play at 5:46.

Thunder Bay answered that by getting two man advantage markers before the first period was complete courtesy of Hamlin and Brendan Gillis.

Hamlin then put the North Stars up by two early in the middle stanza while Dylan Robinson’s eighth of the season at 8:09 added one for the Lakers in what turned out to be the final tally of the night.

Joe Newhouse and Nicholas Nigro chipped in with two assists apiece for the Stars.

Fort Frances fired 48 shots on Thunder Bay netminder Riley Corbin, who earned the win.

Pierce Dushenko made 25 stops in defeat for the Lakers.
