Stout shines as Dryden sinks English River in SIJHL opener

DRYDEN, Ont. – Eric Stout’s Superior International Junior Hockey League debut was a memorable one as he scored four times to help lead his club to a 7-3 victory over the English River Miners in their 2016-17 home opener Friday at Memorial Arena.

It was a dream start for the GM Ice Dogs as they began their 16th season in the SIJHL by tallying three times in the opening stanza on markers by Jacen Bracko with his initial league tally and a pair by Stout , which spelled an early end to English River starter Spencer Eschyschyn’s night after just under 14 minutes.

The Miners got one back 57 seconds into the middle session thanks to Trevor Pereverzoff.

Stout countered that however with a man advantage marker seven minutes later.

English River did add one more before the second was complete on Dwayne Auger’s first in the SIJHL at 11:59.

Dryden put the game away in the third though striking three times on efforts from Cory Dennis, Stout and Woody Galbraith, via the power play, to go up by five.

The Miners’ rounded out the scoring with two and a half minutes to go on Jamie Driedger’s first.

Braeden Allkins and Derek McPhail dished out three assists apiece to aid the Dryden offensive cause.

Taylor Unruh made 19 saves to pick up the win for the GM Ice Dogs.

Eschyschyn allowed three against on 14 attempts while Michael Lenko stopped 17 of 21 in relief and suffered the loss in nearly 47 minutes of relief.
