Shortreed stellar in SIJHL return

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Jameson Shortreed’s return to the Fort Frances Lakers was a memorable one Thursday as the newly reacquired goaltender turned in a 35-save performance to backstop his club to a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Shortreed a former SIJHL rookie of the year and top goaltender award recipient in 2009-10, returned to the club earlier this week after the Lakers made a deal with the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Brendan Cawston staked the home side to the early lead as his effort eluded Iron Rangers’ netminder Chase Hollander at 5:30 of the opening period.

Gus Karkinen levelled the proceedings 10 minutes later for Minnesota as he notched his second goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1 after 20 minutes.

The lone tally of the middle frame came off the stick of Lakers’ forward Colton Spicer as he notched the eventual game-winner midway through the session.

Davis Smith and Jon Carlson tacked on third period markers for Fort Frances to round out the scoring.

Hollander made 24 stops in a losing cause for the Iron Rangers who fell to 4-6 on the year.

Shortreed’s efforts allowed the Lakers to improve to 5-4-0-1.

League play resumes Friday with the Minnesota Wilderness hosting the Dryden Ice Dogs and the Duluth Clydesdales paying a visit to Thunder Bay to meet the North Stars.
