Ruter paces Lakers past North Stars

THUNDER BAY, Ont.  – Fort Frances Lakers forward Payton Ruter tallied twice in the first period to help lead his club to a 5-3 victory over the Thunder Bay North Stars Monday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

After Ruter’s two markers accounted for the only scoring in the opening session, the Lakers extended their lead to 3-0 at 13:54 of the middle stanza as Colton Spicer notched his team-leading 34th goal of the season.

Thunder Bay would get on the board a couple minutes later with Adam Restoule beating Fort Frances netminder Tanner Hamilton to cut into the deficit heading to the final frame.

The Lakers seemingly took control early in the third as Tyler Broderson and Miles Nolan connected a minute apart to increase the Lakers’ lead to four.

Restoule’s second of the night along with a Tim Cavar effort pulled the home side to within a pair, but that’s as close as Thunder Bay got before time expired.

Hamilton made 23 saves to register the victory while Jayme Brattengeier faced 22 shots in a losing cause for the North Stars.

The same two sides will meet again Wednesday back in Thunder Bay at 7:30 p.m. to close out regular season play in the SIJHL for 2012-13.
