Power play leads Miners past Lakers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The English River Miners scored four times on the power play to help lead them past the Fort Frances Lakers 5-2 Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Trevor Pereverzoff tallied twice and added an assist while Dante Juris dished out three helpers to pace the Miners attack.

Pereverzoff opened the scoring for English River during a man advantage 12:23 into the contest as he notched his second of the young season.

Alex McPhee’s first SIJHL marker at 18:14 of the frame put the visitors up a pair only to see Fort Frances counter 14 seconds later with the initial league effort for Tyler Malpass.

Malpass came right back and notched another as he supplied the equalizer 24 seconds into the middle stanza to knot the affair at 2-2.

However English River’s special teams broke the game open as they struck three times while on the power play before the second period was complete to secure the victory.

Sidney Gladue, Scriber and Pereverzoff were the Miners’ marksmen in the session.

English River netminder Michael Lenko did the rest for his side stopping all 13 shots he faced in the third to secure the victory. He finished with 33 stops in all as he recorded his first SIJHL win.

Ryan Wagner started for the Lakers and suffered the loss allowing the five against in 40 minutes of work.

Brandon Bodnar meanwhile played the third for Fort Frances and handled all six attempts he saw in relief.

With the decision English River improves to 1-1-0-0 while the defending SIJHL champion Lakers fell to 0-2-0-0.

League play resumes Wednesday as the Thunder Bay North Stars host the Minnesota Iron Rangers at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort William Gardens.
