North Stars, Ice Dogs, Lakers all victorious Saturday
THUNDER BAY – Three contests on the Superior International Junior Hockey League docket Saturday night saw Thunder Bay, Dryden and Fort Frances all pull out victories.
THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS 5 ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 1 – Daniel Delpaggio had a pair of goals and as many assists to help lead Thunder Bay over English River at the Fort William Gardens.
The North Stars got off to a quick start jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one period of play on markers by Delpaggio, Matthias Gardiman and Brandon Wolframe.
Neither side dented the twine in the middle session, but Zach Grzelewski extended the lead for the home side to four 3:49 into the final frame.
After a Vincent Currao power play effort midway through the third dashed Eric Mann’s shutout bid in the Thunder Bay net, Delpaggio capped off his four-point night with the final tally of the evening, which came at 13:20.
Mann finished 25 stops to pick-up the win for the North Stars.
Greg Harney started for the Miners and suffered the loss while being replaced by P.D. Melgoza after the fourth Thunder Bay goal as duo combined to face 27 shots.
DRYDEN ICE DOGS 5 MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 4 – The hometown Ice Dogs rallied with four third period tallies including pair with under two minutes to play to pull out the comeback triumph over the Iron Rangers.
Minnesota took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on markers by Matt O’Dea and Trevor Hoth.
Chris Varrin pulled Dryden to within one with his second of the season at 7:53 Sam Mancini restored the Iron Rangers’ cushion at 14:14.
The Ice Dogs began their comeback early in the third thanks to Zach Kercz at 2:13 with Chris Sitco burying the equalizer five minutes later.
Mancini then put Minnesota back out front with 4:51 with his second of the evening only to see Tyson Holder tied things up at 18:16.
Then just 32 seconds later Kercz slammed home the game-winner as Dryden completed their rally.
Shots on goal in the contest were 35-35 with Shayne Dietl picking up the win and Erick Majerle the loss.
FORT FRANCES LAKERS 6 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 2 – The Lakers returned to their winning ways jumping out to an early lead and not looking back as they tripled up Wisconsin at the Ice House in Spooner.
Kevin Kurm and Mason Meyer staked Fort Frances to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes to send them on their way.
Lucas Debenedet and Meyer then tacked on tallies in the second stanza to put the visitors in control.
After Bryce Lipinski made it 5-0 early in the third Shane Billing put the Wilderness on the board at 3:39.
Tanner Fricke made it 6-1 midway through the final frame before Justin Gregory added a late power play effort to round out the scoring.
Fort Frances out shot Wisconsin 42-30 on the night with Ryan Ferguson picking up the win and Griffin Strain the loss.
