North Stars hold on to edge Iron Rangers

THUNDER BAY, Ont. –  A Jake Robinson goal 9:12 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars edged the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-3 Wednesday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

Thunder Bay notched the only marker of the opening frame on a Kris Hamlin collected his 15th of the season.

Austin Ramirez tied it for Minnesota just past the two-minute mark of the middle session only to see Nicholas Nigro put the North Stars back in front 30 seconds later.

Dalton Johnson evened the score for the Iron Rangers at 7:53 of the second period, but Charlie Corness’ first SIJHL marker at 14:04 made it 3-2 Thunder Bay through two periods of play.

Robinson’s ninth of the campaign put the home side up by two midway through the third to give the North Stars a two-goal cushion.

Special teams allowed Minnesota to pull within one with 65 seconds remaining as Tyler Lindstrom collected his fourth for the Iron Rangers, in what turned out to be the final tally of the evening.

Riley Corbin made 38 saves to pick-up the win for Thunder Bay.

Anthony Pupplo faced 35 shots in defeat for Minnesota.
