North Stars’ Dupuis blanks Iron Rangers

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Nathaniel Dupuis turned aside all 26 shots he faced to post the first Superior International Junior Hockey League shutout of the season as the Thunder Bay North Stars blanked the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-0 Wednesday evening at the Fort William Gardens.

Skating in their home opener, Thunder Bay got the only goal they would require on this night when Nicholas Nigro scored on the power play at 17:57 of the first period.

The man advantage allowed the North Stars to go up 2-0 just 81 seconds into the middle stanza when a Joe Newhouse blast from the point beat Minnesota starter Alex Burke.

Thunder Bay upped their cushion midway through the stanza as Nigro, last season’s leading goal scorer in the SIJHL, notched his second of the night and third overall to put the hosts up by three.

The North Stars kept coming in the frame as Kris Hamlin collected his first of the campaign from Jesse Talakoski and Brad Thrower late in the period to round out the scoring in the contest.

Brad Arabia dished out two assists to aid the North Stars cause.

Thunder Bay outshot Minnesota 43-26 overall with Dupuis picking up the win while Burke suffered the setback for the Iron Rangers.

SIJHL action resumes Friday on two fronts as the Thief River Falls Norskies visits the Iron Rangers at 7 p.m. in Hoyt Lakes while Thunder Bay heads to Dryden to take on the GM Ice Dogs in a battle of 2-0 clubs at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Arena.
