North Stars and Miners both skate to wins Saturday

THUNDER BAY – Two games in the Superior International Junior Hockey League Saturday saw both the Thunder Bay North Stars and English River Miners both come away with victories over the Dryden Ice Dogs and Minnesota Iron Rangers respectively.

THUNDER BAY NORTH STARS 6 DRYDEN ICE DOGS 4 – A four-goal second period help lead Thunder Bay past Dryden at the Fort William Gardens.

The North Stars took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes getting markers from Alex Vaillant and Kenny Turner while David Lamanna countered the Ice Dogs.

A high-scoring middle frame saw the Stars go up 6-3 with Tim Cavar, Matthias Gardiman, Kris Kellaway and Taylor Santorelli connecting for Thunder Bay with Dane Feeney and Chris Sitko replying for Dryden.

The Ice Dogs added a late power play marker from Cody Kaus in the third to make it close, but that’s as close as the visitors would get before time ran out.

Nathanial Dupuis picked up the win in net for the North Stars making 33 stops.

Shayne Dietl saw 31 shots fired his way in defeat for Dryden.

ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 2 MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 1 – At Ear Falls Arena the hometown Miners got a pair of late goals in the first period and held on from there to edge visiting Minnesota.

After Ryker Moreau opened the scoring at 18:59 of the opening stanza, Vincent Currao notched the eventual game-winner with just 15 seconds remaining in the session to put English River up a pair.

The Iron Rangers cut into the deficit early in the middle frame courtesy of a Trevor Hoth effort at 1:35.

Both goaltenders, in the Miners’ P.D. Melgoza and Minnesota’s Alex Reichle took over from there keeping opposing shooters at bay for the rest of the contest.

Shots on goal favoured Minnesota 33-31.

The same two teams meet again Sunday afternoon in a 2 p.m. matinee in Ear Falls.
