Minnesota storms back to upend Dryden

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers stromed back from a three-goal, third period deficit before eventually defeating the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 5-4 in a shootout Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Each side would score once in the opening 20 minutes with Alex Arnold connecting for Minnesota and Derek McPhail countering for Dryden.

The GM Ice Dogs used special teams to notch the only two tallies in the second stanza with Kyle Pouncy and Braeden Allkins both finding the back of the net via the power play.

Dryden went up by three 4:12 into the third as McPhail scored on a man advantage for his second marker of the evening.

The Iron Rangers started their comeback just over a minute later thanks to John Cuni’s extra man effort.

Minnesota then used the power play to move to within one at 14:47 as Arnold notched his second tally of the game.

Then with time running out, the home side forced overtime with just three seconds left in regulation on Jake Ellingson’s first goal of the season.

After a scoreless five-minute OT, extra shots were needed to determine which team would get the additional point.

In the shootout it was the Iron Ranger’s Zack Taylor who supplied the lone goal to complete Minnesota’s comeback victory.

Dryden outshot Minnesota 38-31 on the night with Kyle Carignan picking up the win while Taylor Unruh suffered the loss, with the GM Ice Dogs salvaging a point.

With the decision, Minnesota improves to 7-9-2 on the season while Dryden slipped to 11-4-2.

Next up on the SIJHL slate sees the GM Ice Dogs heading to Fort Frances Thursday to take on the league-leading Lakers in a 7:30 p.m. start at Ice for Kids Arena.
