Minnesota stops Fort Frances in OT

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers scored late in regulation to tie it then won early in overtime, while shorthanded, to rally for a 3-2 Superior International Junior Hockey League victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Saturday at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Fort Frances got off to a good start as the visitors notched the lone tally of the first period on a Brandon Zajicek power play marker at 18:46.

Minnesota used the man advantage to knot the affair at 1-1 in the second as Logan Froberg connected at 5:57.

The Lakers regained the lead near the 14-minute mark of the third, via the power play, when Jun Yi Zhong notched his second of the season.

Down by one in the final minute, the Iron Rangers forced OT on Froberg’s second of the night with just 33 seconds left to force extra time.

After a late penalty saw Minnesota start overtime shorthanded they still prevailed early in the session as Dalton Johnson was sprung free by Froberg and he made no mistake and beat Fort Frances netminder Ryan Wagner for the game-winner 21 seconds in to end it.

The Iron Rangers outshot the Lakers 43-36 on the night with Sean Angle picking up his first SIJHL win while Wagner suffered the loss, but helped his side pick up a point on the night.
