Minnesota defeats English River in special teams affair

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers defeated the English River Miners 6-4 Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Hoyt Lakes Arena that featured eight special teams tallies.

English River took an early lead 2:50 into the contest as Ryker Moreau struck shorthanded to put the visitors in front.

Minnesota’s Gus Karkinen answered that with a power play marker just over two minutes later only to see the Miners’ Nash Dabb answer that with a man advantage effort of his own at 16:38.

Up a man early in the second, the Iron Rangers tied it on Eric Madison’s eighth of the season, but Dabb connected on the power play at 5:12 to make it 3-2.

The back-and-forth affair saw Auston Ramirez tie it for Minnesota 65 seconds later while Keaton Huott put Minnesota in front for the first time at 14:30 of the second.

Jake Ellingson made it 5-3 for the home side 2:54 into the third before Moreau converted during a Miners’ man advantage opportunity with 14:30 left in regulation.

The Iron Rangers collected their fourth power play marker of the evening with less than two minutes to go to secure the win with Ellingson potting his second of the night.

Dalton Johnson dished out three assists for Minnesota with teammate Alex Arnold as well as Brody Jennings of English River supplied two helpers apiece.

Kyle Carignan made 27 saves for the Iron Rangers to pick up the victory while Reid Kilburn was peppered with 47 shots against in defeat for the Miners.
