Miners skate to 1st win in high-scoring affair

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The English River Miners trio of Landen Matechuk, Alex Maticic and Ryker Moreau combined for 16 points to help them win their first game of a season as they defeated the Thunder Bay North Stars 10-7 Thursday night in a high-scoring Superior International Junior Hockey League affair at Ear Falls Arena.

Maticic had a hat trick and three assists while Matechuk tallied twice and set-up four others and Moreau dished out four helpers in the triumph for English River.

It was a relatively low-scoring opening period with the Miners sandwiching markers by Matechuk and Nash Dabb’s first SIJHL goal around the initial league tally for the North Stars Zac Glowatch.

The two sides then pumped in seven tallies in the middle frame, including four by English River.

Brandon Schaber, Konnar Dechaine, Matechuk and then Maticic, on the power play with a second to go in the stanza connected for the Miners while Avery Siau, Kris Hamlin and Joe Newhouse countered for Thunder Bay.

The tallies kept coming in the third with seven more goals being scored.

Darien Standing’s first, Matthew O’Neill and two more by Maticic, which included the final one into an empty net, accounted for the markers for the home side.

The North Stars received efforts from Nicholas Nigro, Christian Ward and Jake Robinson to round out their offensive production with Jared Fanti chipping in with three assists.

Shots on goal favoured the Miners 42-34 with Reid Kilburn picking up the win.

Tyler Lesschaeve started for Thunder Bay and allowed five against with Devin Russell giving up the final five and suffering the loss in relief.
