Miners sink Lakers 4-3

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The ever-improving English River Miners continue to produce positive results in the Superior International Junior Hockey League.

Their latest solid show came Tuesday evening as they defeated the SIJHL-leading Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 at Ear Falls Arena.

Each side tallied twice in the opening 20 minutes with Chris Harbec and Vince Currao connecting for the Miners with Lucas Debenedet and Mason Meyer countering for Fort Frances.

Paul Lameroux then notched the only effort in the middle frame to put the home side up 3-2 heading in the third.

He then notched the eventual game-winner early in the final session to put English River up a pair at 2:42.

Debenedet’s second of the evening brought the Lakers to within one with 16 minutes remaining, but that’s as close as they would get before time expired.

P.D. Melgoza was solid in net for the first-year Miners making 38 saves to pick-up the win while Ryan Ferguson made 24 stops in a losing cause for Fort Frances.

English River improved to 12-13-2-0 with the victory while the Lakers slipped to 23-3-0-2.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as the Minnesota Iron Rangers host the Thunder Bay North Stars in a 7 p.m. start at Hoyt Lakes Arena.
