Miners’ Schaber commits to NCAA D-III St. Mary’s of MIAC

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The English River Miners of the Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Sunday that defenceman Brandon Schaber has committed to attend St. Mary’s University and play NCAA D-III for the Cardinals in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Schaber, who hails from Alder Flatts, Alta., just completed his Jr. A career with English River as the Miners wrapped up their season with a semifinal setback vs. the two-time defending Bill Salonen Cup champion Fort Frances Lakers.

He currently leads all SIJHL defenceman in playoff scoring with 11 points in nine games on two goals and nine assists.

That is also presently the second highest total among all skaters in the league.

During the course of the regular season, Schaber also topped all English River D-men in offensive production with 28 points in 47 outings, including 10 tallies.

That was the seventh best total in the SIJHL among defencemen.

“Brandon is not only a well-rounded hockey player, but a humble, quality person,” offered Miners head coach and general manager Derek Sweet-Coulter.

“We thank him for his leadership in our community and congratulate him on his achievement,” added Sweet-Couler.

Saint Mary’s is one of nine schools that comprise the MIAC men’s hockey conference.
