Miners rally to edge North Stars 3-2 in shootout

EAR FALLS – The English River Miners rallied from a two-goal, third period deficit to defeat the Thunder Bay North Stars 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ear Falls Arena.

Thunder Bay opened the scoring with the lone tally of the opening period as Kenny Turner notched his second of the season at 14:46 of the stanza.

Keanu Adduono’s first-ever SIJHL goal extended the North Stars cushion near the midway point of the contest to put the visitors up a pair after 40 minutes.

Not to be deterred English River answered back in the third getting markers from Dominic Blouin and John Morales 40 seconds apart to level the proceedings.

The score stayed that way through the rest of regulation and the five-minute overtime session with extra shots being required to determine a winner and decide which team would pick-up the additional point in the standings.

After Morales and Blouin tallied in the shootout for the Miners and Mathias Gardiman countered for the North Stars, Thunder Bay’s Trevor Hynnes need to convert to keep the game going, but his shot rang off the crossbar to give the home side the win.

Reigning Pizza Hut player of the week P.D. Melgoza was stellar making 34 saves in regulation and the five-minute overtime along with two of three in the shootout to pick-up the victory for English River.

Eric Mann was peppered with 46 pucks in a losing cause.

With the victory Miners improved to 4-9-1-0 while the Stars earned a point, but slipped to 8-1-0-2 overall.

SIJHL play resumes Wednesday as the surging Fort Frances Lakers look to extend a league-best winning streak to 11 games as they travel to Dryden to take on the Ice Dogs in a 7:30 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
