Miners’ P.D. Melgoza named Pizza Hut player of the week

THUNDER BAY – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday that English River Miners goaltender P.D. Melgoza has been named Pizza Hut player of the week for the period ending Oct. 27.

In two starts during the week that was the 19-year-old native of Torrance, Calif., won both of them helping the first-year Miners skate to their first multi-win week in the franchise’s brief history.

Melgoza began his award-winning effort this past Tuesday turning in a 32-save performance in English River’s first-ever victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs as they won 6-5 on home ice.

Three nights later back at Ear Falls Arena the Miners’ netminder made 34 stops in a 6-2 triumph over the Wisconsin Wilderness.

Also receiving consideration for the league’s weekly award were Thunder Bay North Stars forward Daniel Delpaggio and Fort Frances Lakers forward Colton Spicer.

At the conclusion of the regular season the SIJHL’s most valuable player will be presented the Pizza Hut player of the year award and will also go on to be the league’s representative for the national Canadian Junior Hockey League player of the year trophy.
