Miners hit win column with triumph over Fort Frances

COCHENOUR, Ont. – Ethan Wong collected his first two Superior International Junior Hockey League goals Friday to help the English River Miners register their first win of the season as they defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 4-2 at Cochenour Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Fort Frances would get on the board 7:45 into the middle stanza on Damien Carigni’s third tally of the season.

Wong would tie it for the Miners later in the frame only to see the Lakers go back in front under two minutes later on a Jaedin Ness effort.

English River rallied in the final frame, drawing even thanks to Matt O’Neill 38 seconds into the third.

They then kept coming and got the game-winner with 11:02 to go off the stick of Jared Janke.

Fort Frances pulled their goaltender in the late going in an effort to tie and force overtime, but Wong iced it with an empty netter in the final minute to secure the Miners’ first win of the season as they improved to 1-2 overall.

Michael Lenko made 30 saves to register the victory for English River while Rob Ivy faced 26 shots in defeat for the Lakers who fell to 1-2-0-1 early in the season.
