Miners’ goaltender Harney named Pizza Hut player of the week
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday that English River Miners netminder Greg Harney has been named Pizza Hut player of the week for the period ending Feb. 9.
In two starts this past week the 19-year-old New Haven, Conn., product won both of them, including posting his league-leading third shutout of the season in backstopping the Miners to a sweep of a home-and-home set against the Dryden Ice Dogs.
Harney began his award-winning effort making 28 saves in allowing only one event strength goal against in an 8-3 road victory on Feb. 6.
Two nights later he stopped all 26 shots fired his way in blanking the Ice Dogs 4-0 at Ear Falls Arena.
Heading into tonight’s home game vs. the Thunder Bay North Stars, Harney not only tops all SIJHL goalkeepers in shutouts, he also leads the way in save percentage at .914.
Also earning consideration for Pizza Hut player of the week was Lyndon Lipinski, (F) Fort Frances Lakers; Noah Anderson, (D) Minnesota Iron Rangers; Zach Grzelewski, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Tim Kavanaugh, (D) Dryden Ice Dogs and Alex Arnold, (D) Wisconsin Wilderness.
At the conclusion of the regular season the SIJHL’s most valuable player will be presented the Pizza Hut player of the year award and will also go on to be the league’s representative for the national Canadian Junior Hockey League player of the year trophy.
