Lakers’ Tappenden named CJHL’s 2nd star of the month for February

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Fort Frances Lakers goaltender Devin Tappenden has been named its second star of the month for February.

The 19-year old native of Markham, Ont., was recognized by the CJHL after posting an impressive 8-0 record, including five victories on the road during the month that was, helping No. 5 CJHL-ranked Fort Frances wrap-up the SIJHL’s regular season title along the way.  

Tappenden, who was named the SIJHL’s Gongshow Gear performer of the month in February, recorded a solid 1.88 goals-against average along with a .927 save percentage in that span, while allowing two or fewer goals against in each of his last six starts in the time frame.

This marks the second consecutive month a SIJHLer has earned national laurels as Thunder Bay North Stars rookie forward Daniel Del Paggio was named the CHJL’s third star for January.

Garnering CJHL first star laurels for February was another netminder in Sam Tanguay of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Kingston Voyageurs.

Like Tappenden, the 18-year-old Tanguay, who hails from Quebec City, Que., was also 8-0 while along the way registering a 1.73 GAA and a save mark of .935. He also had two shutouts.

Meanwhile forward Bryce Milson of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League picked up CJHL third star recognition.

Skating for his hometown Miramichi Timberwolves in New Brunswick, Milson racked up 19 points in nine outings on nine tallies and 10 assists.

Honourable mention for the CJHL three stars for February went to Andy Sturtz of the Carleton Place Canadians of the Central Canada Hockey League based in the Ottawa area.

The skilled forward piled up 23 points in a dozen outings for the CCHL-leading Canadians notching 13 goals while setting up 10 others.
