Lakers strike quickly to sink Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn.  – The visiting Fort Frances Lakers struck for four first period goals and never looked back en route to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Davis Smith started things off 2:50 into the contest beating Minnesota starter Chase Hollander with his 13th marker of the season.

Merritt Rysavy increased the cushion lead 10 minutes later, via the power play, with his side tacking on two more tallies less than a minute apart after that courtesy of Mason Meyer and Tyler Broderson.

The Iron Rangers got on the board early in the middle frame courtesy of a Kyle Fink man advantage effort.

Patrick Sofer restored the four-goal lead at 11:18 of the session by scoring on the power play.

Nolan Holcombe brought the home side closer before the stanza was complete, but it would turn out to be the final tally of the night.

Talor Joseph made 24 saves to win his fifth straight start since joining the Lakers last month.

Hollander suffered the loss on an evening that saw Fort Frances fire 28 shots on net.

SIJHL play resumes Saturday as the league-leading Minnesota Wilderness host the fifth place Thunder Bay North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet.
