Lakers sink Iron Rangers 7-3

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers got three points apiece from Jared Virtanen and Dylan Kooner to help lead them to a 7-3 win over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Saturday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ice for Kids Arena.

The contest was scoreless until the late going of the first period when Tyler Malpass scored during a Fort Frances power play with just eight seconds left in the frame.

Minnesota’s Clayton Brown tied it early in the middle session, but the Lakers responded with Mark Richter’s first SIJHL goal and Jared Virtanen’s 12th to go up 3-1.

Eli Kinsman brought the visitors to within one 17 seconds later, but Fort Frances responded once again getting tallies from Virtanen and Jack Bernie to go up 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Matt Cheetham added to the lead for the home side 2:44 into the third while Brett Pickler notched his initial league effort later on to add to the Lakers lead.

Sheamus Stoyle got one back for the Iron Rangers with 5:49 to go to round out the scoring.

Jessie Heisz made 24 saves to post the win in the SIJHL debut while Jackson Nelson faced 44 attempts in defeat for Minnesota.
