Lakers, North Stars to play Memorial game in Marathon
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced today that the Fort Frances Lakers and Thunder Bay North Stars will be playing a Memorial game on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Marathon Arena.
This exhibition contest is being played in memory and honour of Jaret Leclair, Jordan Nabigon, Kody Nabigon and Greg Nabigon, four Pic River First Nation residents, who tragically lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident last October.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on this night followed by the warm-up at 7:30 p.m. followed a pre-game ceremony and the opening face-off.
Admission is just $10 for adults, $5 for students under 18 while kids under five will be admitted free.
Both Jaret Leclair and Jordan Nabigon were alumnus of the SIJHL with Leclair playing with Fort Frances during his junior career while Nabigon suited up for the Sioux Lookout Flyers.
Kody Nabigon meanwhile was an avid hockey player in Marathon and Greg Nabigon was a father of four with hockey serving as a huge part and love in all of these young men lives.
All proceeds from the event with go to the Pic River Memorial Fund in the memory of these four individuals.
“It is a tremendous honour and privilege for the Fort Frances Lakers to be part of this game to honour the memory of these four young men,” said Lakers head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan.
“Jaret played three seasons for us with the Lakers and was very popular among his teammates and our fans. All four men we are honouring were devoted fans of hockey and we as an organization are humbled to be part of this tribute game to remember them,” added Strachan.
SIJHL President/Commissioner Ron Whitehead echoed the sentiments of Strachan.
“We at the SIJHL are proud to be part of this night of tribute in memory of Jaret, Jordan, Kody and Greg, who were all taken from us much too soon,” stated Whitehead.
“Our league, teams, players, coaching staffs and officials wholeheartedly support this worthwhile endeavour in being part of this memorial game.”
