Lakers’ Dushenko, GM Ice Dogs’ Laferriere named Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions co-players of the week
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday that goaltenders Pierce Dushenko of the Fort Frances Lakers and Paul Leferriere of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs have been named the Amyotte’s Awards & Promotions Corp. co-players of the week for the period ending Dec. 13.
Each netminder went 2-0 is as many starts for their respective clubs helping them maintain the top two spots in the SIJHL standings.
Dushenko began by turning aside all 32 shots he faced to post his league-leading fourth shutout of the season on Dec. 11 at Dryden picking up a 5-0 win.
Three nights later the 20-year-old Coquitlam, B.C. product kicked out 43 of the 45 pucks fired his way in a 5-2 home ice victory over Minnesota.
Dushenko also tops all SIJHL goalkeepers in average and save percentage at 2.32 and .925 respectively while having gone an impressive 17-1-0-1 so far this season.
As for Laferriere he started his week by stopping 18 of 19 attempts in a 6-1 road decision vs. English River.
The 19-year-old native of Wainright, Alta., then handled all 38 shots put on net to register his first SIJHL shutout Saturday at home against the Miners.
Laferriere had a stingy 0.50 average for the week along with a solid .982 save percentage and has now won each of his past five starts.
He sits second in average in the league at 2.52 and third with a .905 save mark.
Also earning consideration for Amyotte’s player of the week honours was Bryce Martyn, (D) Thunder Bay North Stars; McKenzie Gray, (F) Minnesota Iron Rangers and Trevor Pereverzoff, (D) English River Miners.
