Lakers drop Iron Rangers in OT

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – A Dylan Kooner goal 37 seconds into overtime lifted the Fort Frances Lakers to a narrow 3-2 decision over the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest Tuesday at Ice for Kids Arena.

Each side scored once in the opening 20 minutes with Fort Frances getting on the board first thanks to Carter Chorney’s third of the season at 10:50.

Minnesota came right back on the next shift however and notched the equalizer 30 seconds later as Brock James notched his first SIJHL goal.

The Iron Rangers then took a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes after Josh Gouin found the back of the net 2:50 into the second stanza.

Battling back to force extra time in the third the Lakers got the equalizer from Dylan Robertson as he redirected a Robbie Bonthron shot to tie it with with 5:24 remaining in regulation.

Kooner then won it early in OT for the home side with Chorney and Bonthron earning assists on the game-winner.

Pierce Dushenko made 33 saves in picking up the victory for the league-leading Lakers, who improved to 10-2-0-0 on the season.

Alex Burke saw faced 33 attempts in a losing cause for third place Minnesota as they fell to 6-7-2-0 overall.
