Lakers and Ice Dogs post wins Saturday

THUNDER BAY – Saturday night in the Superior International Junior Hockey League saw the Fort Frances Lakers skate to a convincing victory over the English River Miners while the Dryden Ice Dogs made two wins in as many outings to remain unbeaten early on.
 
FORT FRANCES LAKERS 12 ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 2 – After letting an early three-goal lead get away from them in a season-opening loss to Thunder Bay Friday, the Lakers didn’t let it happen again as they skated past the first-year Miners at Ice for Kids Arena.

It was all Fort Frances in the first getting tallies from Bryson Jasper, Billy Grillo and Bryce Lipinski to go up 3-0 after 20 minutes.

English River battled back in the second getting a pair of markers from Vincent Currao to pull within one, but Luke Debenedet tacked on his second is as many nights to put the Lakers up 4-2 after 40 minutes.

The home side then blew it open in the third exploding for eight goals in the session, including the final four on the power play, to put it away with Lyndon Lipinski netting a pair Tarran Romyn. Miles Nolan, Patrick Sofer, Tanner Fricke, Debenedet and Jasper all getting into the act.

Jordan Cartney picked up the win finishing with 21 stops on the night.

Eric Ouellet started for English River and was saddled with the loss allowing seven against while P.D. Melgoza gave up the final five in 17 minutes of relief.

DRYDEN ICE DOGS 4 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 1 – A four-goal second period was the difference as the Ice Dogs improved to 2-0 early in the season winning at Memorial Arena.

Wisconsin opened the scoring with the lone tally of the first 20 minutes as Wilderness captain Zach Kraft struck shorthanded at 11:36.

In the second it was all Dryden however striking for four goals in a 15-minute span.

After Casey Prange tied it 4:22 into the middle stanza, Chris Sitco notched the eventual game-winner three minutes later.

The Ice Dogs continued their offensive production getting markers from Dane Feeney and Sitco again, with just three seconds remaining in the second to extend the cushion.

Neither side scored in the third as the home side won for a second straight night after opening with a 4-2 triumph over English River Friday.

Terry Hughes made 28 saves in his SIJHL debut to register the victory.

Luke Thompson saw 37 shots in a losing cause for the Wilderness.

The same two teams meet again Sunday evening back in Dryden at 7:30 p.m.
