Janke the hero as Miners clip North Stars in OT

COCHENOUR, Ont. – Jared Janke’s third goal of the game, coming 1:57 into overtime was the difference as the English River Miners defeated the Thunder Bay North Stars 5-4 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Cochenour Arena.

Each side scored once in the first with Michael Di Lullo putting English River in front early before Avery Siau tied it for Thunder Bay.

In the second, the North Stars sandwiched markers from Lucas Sandberg at even strength and Bradley Thrower on the power play around a Janke man advantage effort to make it 3-2 for the visitors after two.

Janke and Ethan Wong then struck in the first minute of the third to put the Miners back in front before Keighan Gerrie forced extra time for Thunder Bay at 7:15.

In OT it was Janke that finished off his hat trick to help his side defeat the North Stars for a second straight night.

Spencer Milne had a couple of assists for English River and Alex Maticic had three helpers against his former club for the Stars.

Michael Lenko made 45 saves to record the win while Brandon Bodnar saw 44 shots in defeat.
