Iron Rangers win 100th SIJHL game

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – John Cuni scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Minnesota Iron Rangers won their 100th Superior International Junior Hockey League regular season contest Tuesday evening as they defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The victory by Minnesota also ended the season-high nine-game winning streak of Fort Frances, who have however recorded 19 of a possible 20 points in their last 10 outings.

After a scoreless opening period, Cuni staked the home side to the lead 1:22 into the second stanza.

Jake Ellingson then made it 2-0 two minutes later to put the Iron Rangers up by a pair.

The Lakers countered before the session was complete tallying twice in a 65-second span to knot the affair on markers by Dylan Robertson and Robbie Bonthron.

Ellingson notched his second of the night midway through the third as he scored on a Minnesota man advantage opportunity.

Fort Frances fought back to force overtime as Robertson struck for the equalizer at 18:31.

After a scoreless OT, Cuni provided the difference maker his his club’s first attempt in the shootout.

Kyle Carigan had a big night in goal for the Iron Rangers making 45 saves to record the win.

Pierce Dushenko faced 29 shots in defeat for the Lakers helping his side pick up a point in the contest.
