Ice Dogs edge Iron Rangers in shootout while Miners tame Wilderness

THUNDER BAY – A pair of Superior International Junior Hockey League contests Friday saw the Dryden Ice Dogs edge the Minnesota Iron Rangers 3-2 in a shootout while the English River Miners tamed the Wisconsin Wilderness 6-2.

DRYDEN ICE DOGS 3 MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 2 (SO) – At Dryden’s Memorial Arena a six-player aside shootout was required before an outcome was decided before the Ice Dogs finally won.

The visiting Iron Rangers took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes getting goals from Jason Reynolds and A.J. Rupert sandwiched around a marker by Dryden’s Cody Kaus.

Following a scoreless middle frame the Ice Dogs forced extra time 25 seconds into third period thanks to a Jarrett Day effort.

Both goaltenders, Shane Dietl for Dryden and Minnesota’s Alex Riechle were solid throughout with the Ice Dogs’ Chris Sitco being the only one of 12 skaters to score in the shootout to give the home side the extra point in the standings.

Shots on goal favoured Dryden 35-27 in regulation and the five-minute overtime.

ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 6 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 2 – At Ear Falls the hometown Miners broke open a 2-2 game in the third period with four unanswered goals to pull away in the triumph over Wisconsin.

Alex Arnold for the Wilderness and Taylor Bargar of English River accounted for the only goals of the opening 20 minutes.

Each side also found the back of the net once in the middle session with Nick Minerva connecting for Wisconsin and Bargar again for the Miners.

With the score still knotted at 2-2 midway through the final stanza Brendan Wilde struck shorthanded with 9:50 to go with the eventual game-winner.

John Morales, Vincent Currao and Devan Vander Wyk added later tallies to complete the win for English River.

P.D. Melgoza made 34 saves to pick-up the victory for the Miners while Luke Thompson saw 36 shots in a losing cause for the Wilderness.
