Fort Frances wins 7th straight

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers began 2016 just like they finished 2015, with a win, as they captured their seventh consecutive Superior International Junior Hockey League contest with a 4-1 victory over the English River Miners Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.

It was the Miners who got on the board first in this one as Konnar Dechaine collected his 16th of the season 3:03 into the contest.

The Lakers countered with the equalizer midway through the opening frame as Nick Minerva scored on the power play while extending a goal streak to five and a point run to seven in the process.

Andrew Willner’s 11th of the season 73 seconds into the second stanza proved to be the game-winner as the 2-1 score held up into the final frame.

Dylan Kooner added some insurance for Fort Frances with 1:19 to go before Christina Ripley iced it with an empty netter in the final moments to round out the scoring.

Dylan Robertson supplied two assists apiece for the Lakers in the win.

Shots on goal on the night favoured Fort Frances 39-35 on the night with Brandon Bodnar picking up the victory and Reid Kilburn the defeat.
