Fort Frances rallies to edge English River

RED LAKE, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers rallied for three third period goals to edge the English River Miners 3-2 in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Tuesday at Cochenour Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Miners got on the board via the power play 12:34 into the middle stanza as Alex Maticic notched his ninth of the season.

Fort Frances tied it a minute and a half into the third thanks to a Dylan Kooner effort.

The Lakers then took the lead 19 seconds later as Kooner struck again supplying a shorthanded goal.

They then went up 3-1 with six minutes to go on Jack Bernie’s man advantage marker.

English River got that one back at 15:25 when Bryan Kromm connected on the power play.

The Miners would get no closer however before time expired.

Dustin Deugau chipped in with two assists for the visitors in the victory.

Pierce Dushenko made 26 saves to record the win for the Lakers as they improved to 8-2-0-0 on the year while moving back into top spot in the SIJHL standings in the process, one point ahead of second place Dryden.

Reid Kilburn faced 33 shots in defeat for English River, who dropped to 3-6-1-2 overall.
