Fort Frances moves to within a win of advancing to SIJHL final

COCHENOUR, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers broke open a one-goal game by striking three times in the latter stages of the second period as they went on to defeat the English River Miners 5-1 Wednesday evening in Game 3 of their Superior International Junior Hockey League semifinal series at Cochenour Arena.

Fort Frances now leads this best-of-seven series 3-0 and will have an opportunity to advance to their fifth consecutive Bill Salonen Cup final with a win in Game 4, which goes Thursday at 7 p.m. CT back at Cochenour Arena in Red Lake.

In Wednesday’s match-up the Lakers picked up the lone marker of the opening period early on as Dustin Deugau notched his first of the postseason at 2:37.

It stayed that way until the 15:04 mark of the middle stanza as SIJHL MVP Dylan Robertson collected his sixth goal of the series.

A minute later the visitors added another with Cole Tymkin collecting his initial league playoff marker.

Fort Frances then capped off the late outburst with 57 seconds left in the frame as Nolas Ross beat Miners starter Korlan Vader to put the Lakers in control heading into the third.

In the final session, special teams allowed Fort Frances to go up by five as A.J. Rupert stuck shorthanded at 3:12 with Robertson earning an assist on the play.

English River put an end to Lakers’ netminder Pierce Dushenko’s shutout bid four minutes later with Bryan Kromm connecting on the power play.

Tymkin added two helpers to go along with his goal for a three-point night.

Dushenko stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced to record the win.

Vader meanwhile faced 33attempts in defeat for English River.
