Fort Frances edges Minnesota in shootout; Dryden defeats Wisconsin

THUNDER BAY – Game action in the Superior International Junior Hockey League Wednesday saw the Fort Frances Lakers come out on top over the Minnesota Iron Rangers 6-5 in a four-round shootout while the Dryden Ice Dogs defeated the Wisconsin Wilderness 5-2.

FORT FRANCES LAKERS 6 MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 5 (SO) – Tanner Fricke tallied twice and then added the decider in the shootout as Fort Frances prevailed over Minnesota at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

With the victory the Lakers improved their record to 16-0-0-1 in their past 17 games having picked up 33 of a possible 34 points in that span.

The setback put an end to a six-game winning streak for the Iron Rangers, but they did pick-up a point in the shootout loss and now have 13 out of a potential 14 points in their last seven outings.

Mason Meyer also scored twice for Fort Frances as he also added an assist while Patrick Sofer added a solo marker.

Lyndon Lipinski dished out three helpers to aid the visitors’ offensive cause.

Drew Millis, Trevor Hoth, Tom Fazio, Matt O’Dea all notched power play goals for Minnesota while Jonathon Losurdo added one at even strength.

Colton Spicer of the Lakers and Jason Reynolds of Minnesota also scored in the shootout for their respective sides.

Shots on goal were 30-30 with Jordan Cartney picking up the win in relief of starter Ryan Ferguson who gave way after the third Iron Rangers’ effort.

Alex Reichle suffered the shootout defeat.

Overall, first place, Fort Frances has a 17-1-0-2 record while Minnesota is tied for second spot with Thunder Bay with 27 points apiece. The Iron Rangers went to 12-5-0-3 while the North Stars, who hold three games in hand, sit at 12-2-0-3.

DRYDEN ICE DOGS 5 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 2 – Recently acquired forward Adam Smith made an immediate impression with his new team by scoring twice, including notching the game-winner, and adding an assist in his first game with the Ice Dogs to lead them to the triumph over the Wilderness at Memorial Arena.

Chris Sitco also had a big night for Dryden tallying twice and dishing out a pair of helpers in the victory.

Tim Kavanaugh also chipped in with a goal and an assist to aid the Ice Dogs cause.

Zach Kraft and Tanner Vinson connected for Wisconsin.

Shots on goal ended up 28-27 in favour of the Ice Dogs with Shayne Dietl picking up the win and Griffin Strain the loss.
