Dryden’s Allkins named SIJHL’s Play It Again Sports player of the week

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Dryden GM Ice Dogs forward Braeden Allkins has been named its Play It Again Sports player of the week for the period ending March 12.

In two games last week, Allkins scored in both of them, including a record-setting tally Saturday as Dryden skated to a pair of victories over the visiting Thief River Falls Norskies at Memorial Arena.

The 20-year-old native of Golden, B.C., began his efforts by scoring once in a triumph over the Norskies Friday.

He then added a first period assist Saturday and followed that up with a marker in the final frame, which saw him become the first player in GM Ice Dogs history to scored 50 goals in a season.

In reaching the half-century tally plateau, Allkins also became just the third player in the 16-year run of the SIJHL to score 50 times in a single campaign.

He joins Kory McEwan, who notched 69 with the Fort William North Stars in 2005-06 and Chris Bryson, who supplied 56 for the Schreiber Diesels in 2006-07, in this exclusive club.

Allkins, a finalist for the league’s Mallon’s Corporate Impressions/Play It Again Sports most valuable player award, currently leads all SIJHL skaters in offensive production with 93 points, including 43 assists.

He’s also currently riding a 10-game point streak in which he’s supplied goals in nine of them, contributing 14 in total, along with adding seven helpers.

Also earning consideration for SIJHL Play It Again Sports player of the week honours were the following:

Brandon Zajicek, (D) Fort Frances Lakers; Avery Siau, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Sam Novak, (G) Thief River Falls Norskies and Jackson Nelson, (G) Minnesota Iron Rangers.

NOTE: The English River Miners did not play last week, thus did not have a nominee.
