Dryden returns to winning ways

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Dryden Ice Dogs got a hat-trick and an assist from Paul Thompson along with a pair of tallies and a couple helpers from Dan Morin to help them outlast the Fort Frances Lakers 7-5 Monday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Arena.

A six-goal first period highlighted the opening frame with Morin, Thompson, Tyson Holder and Rory Court scoring for the Ice Dogs while Colton Spicer and Ethan Brekke countered for the Lakers.

Dryden extended their lead to 6-3 after 40 minutes with Thompson tallying twice to complete his three-goal night with Alex Bruess adding one for Fort Frances.

After Morin made it a four-goal game early in the third the Lakers rebounded with markers from Jordan Christiansen and Jon Carlson to make it close, but that wrapped up the night’s offensive outburst.

The Ice Dogs Jesse Linner and the Lakers’ Merritt Rysavy both dished out three assists each for their clubs.

Eric Szymczyk made 27 saves to pick-up the win in net for Dryden as they put the brakes on a three-game winless drought improving to 6-3 on the year.

Tanner Hamilton started for Fort Frances allowing four goals on 15 shots with Dustin Stevens suffering the loss in relief facing 30 attempts and giving up three tallies.

The setback put an end to a four-game win streak for the Lakers who fell to 4-4-1 on the year.
