Dryden defeats Fort Frances for the 1st time this season

DRYDEN, Ont. – A Kent Walchuk deflected goal on a shot following a face-off win 6:48 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs doubled up the Fort Frances Lakers 4-2 Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

The victory marks the first win by Dryden over Fort Frances in nine opportunities this season as the Lakers dropped their season-high third game in a row.

Special teams allowed the home team to open the scoring as Troy Williams picked up a power play goal at 6:39 as he notched his 11th marker of the season.

Dryden added to their lead with the lone effort of the middle session with Nic Noseworthy adding his 14th at 2:54 to put them up by a pair through 40 minutes.

Fort Frances got right back in it 33 seconds into the third as Jason Wilson beat GM Ice Dogs starter Troy Pierce, who was making his SIJHL debut.

The Lakers then tied it three minutes later on a Roshen Jaswal effort as he collected his seventh of the campaign.

Dryden got the eventual decider near the seven-minute mark thanks to Walchuk, who redirected a Ben Smaha shot off a face-win by Braden Allkins past Fort Frances goalkeeper Brandon Bodnar.

The Lakers pulled Bodnar late in favour of an extra attacker in an effort to force overtime, but Williams iced it with a lengthy empty netter with 38 seconds left to secure the decision for Dryden.

Pierce made 23 saves to earn the win in his first game with the GM Ice Dogs.

Bodnar faced 33 shots in defeat for Fort Frances.
