Brown’s hat-trick leads Thunder Bay past English River

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Thunder Bay North Stars veteran forward Cary Brown tallied three times to help power his side past the visiting English River Miners 6-3 Thursday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

English River got off to a good start striking 88 seconds after the opening face-off as Devan Wander Wyk beat North Stars netminder Eric Mann for his 11th goal of the season.

The home side answered back with a pair of markers a half minute apart to go up 2-1 after 20 minutes as Brown and Kris Kellaway found the back of the net.

Thunder Bay came out firing in the middle session connecting three times courtesy of Brown, Robert MacLean and Brett Wolframe, shorthanded, to go up 5-1.

Dominic Blouin countered on the power play for the Miners to pull them within three entering the third.

A second Blouin man advantage effort 1:48 into the final frame made it 5-3, but Brown finished off his hat-trick at 4:17 to round out the night’s scoring.

Taylor Santorelli set-up up each of Brown’s goals to also give him a three-point night while Daniel Del Paggio dished out a pair of assists for Thunder Bay as the Canadian Junior Hockey Leagues third star of the month for January ran a consecutive game point streak to 27 straight contests.

Brendan Wilde and Ryley Pace both had a pair of helpers in a losing cause for English River.

Mann finished with 20 saves in net for the Stars who fired 35 shots on P.D. Melgoza who suffered the loss for the Miners.

SIJHL play continues Friday as Dryden visits Wisconsin at 7 p.m. and Minnesota heads to Fort Frances to take on the league-leading Lakers at 7:30 p.m.
